Wally Kincaid
Cerritos College

When Cerritos College was in the process of building a campus, they viewed athletics as a way to bring students to the school. One of the sports was baseball. But who would be the best hire for the position? The selection would be Wally Kincaid, a local product who attended Downey High and Whittier College. Kincaid took over the brand new Falcon program in 1958 and by the time he was done after 22 (1958-77, 1979-80) years of leading the program, he led the school to six California State Championships, 15 conference championships, six Southern California Championships and one Northern California Championship. He posted a career 678-163 record for an amazing .803 winning percentage and led his teams to an incredible 60-game winning streak that spanned over three seasons (1965-67).

Coach Kincaid took over the new program in 1958 and led an all-freshman team to a 14-14 record. By the next season, he guided them to the Western State Conference championship, and by 1966, they became the first and only community college team to go undefeated, as they went 40-0 and won the state championship. It was the first of a record six state titles, more than any other school to this day.

However, it was more than wins and losses that helped define the legend of Wally Kincaid. During his tenure, Kincaid sent over 150 of his student-athletes into professional baseball, while even more than that went on to be coaches at all different levels. Several of his more notable players who went on to coach include George Horton (who recently was named the head coach at the University of Oregon, but won a College World Series at Cal State Fullerton), Mike Weathers (Cal State Long Beach), Dave Snow (former head coach at Cal State Long Beach), Don Sneddon (the all-time leader in community college wins at Santa Ana College), Ken Gaylord (Cerritos College), Dave Serrano (Cal State Fullerton) and Bob Apodaca, who is currently the pitching coach for the Colorado Rockies.

Even after he retired from coaching with Cerritos College, Kincaid made himself available to serve as a mentor to his former players, and even served as a full-time assistant coach on three College World Series teams at Cal State Long Beach. He also spent time working with Cal State Fullerton and Santa Ana College.

Cerritos College went on to bestow Kincaid the highest honor, when they named their baseball stadium Kincaid Field in 1990. Other honors followed Kincaid around, and in the spring of 2000, Baseball America Magazine named Kincaid the National Community College Baseball Coach of the Century. Even through today, Kincaid is widely considered the best coach in the history of community college baseball and the way he taught the game is still being played today
